How To Check National Identity Card Status (NIMC)

For those of you who enrolled for their National Identity Card through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), this is to inform you that 2012 - 2017 cards has been dispatched and cheking of National Identity Card has commenced.

You're required to visit check your national identity card status online or via registration/activation centre. 

About NIN

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of numbers assigned to an individual upon successful enrolment. Enrolment consists of the recording of an individual’s demographic data and capture of the ten (10) fingerprints, head-to-shoulder facial picture and digital signature, which are all used to cross-check existing data in the National Identity Database to confirm that there is no previous entry of the same data.

Once this (de-duplication) process is completed the data is then stored with a unique NIN that was assigned to it. The NIN once issued to a person cannot be used again, (that is, it cannot be issued to another person even if the previous person is dead). It is the NIN that helps to tie all records about a person in the database and is used to check the identity verified.

The NIMC Act 2007 provides for the establishment of the NIMC, its functions, powers, establishment of the National Identity Database, assignment and use of General Multi-purpose cards, and the National Identification Number (NIN). The Act also provides the Commission with powers to make regulations connected with its functions. The NIMC Act 2007 provides the repeal of the law that created the former Department of National Civic Registration (DNCR) and the transfer of its assets and liabilities to the NIMC.

Eligibility For NIN

It is mandatory for every citizen and legal resident to enrol for the National Identification Number (NIN). The process is the same whether you choose the self-service or you require an assisted service. How To Enrol >>

Minors are not issued with the National Identity cards until they attain the age of 16. See Supporting Documents for Enrolment

Collection of the NIN

At the completion of the enrolment process, applicant will be issued two (2) slips: 
(a) Transaction Slip
(b) NIN Slip indicating completion of enrolment.

Applicants ideally collect their NINs at the enrolment centres where they enrolled, but in certain circumstances they can request the NINs be transferred to other centres of their choice.
NIN can only be collected by an individual after biometric verification and not by proxy.

Click on Proceed

You'll be redirected to where you will see the required sections as shown below:

Fill the form as requied. e.g. First name ==>> James, Last Name ==>> Kase, Last Six digits 123456.
Then press the green button that indicates "Check Now"

Thats it.

Conclusion

NIMC representative described the advantages of the new national identity card. Apart from many other things, it may also be used as an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card anywhere in the world where there is MasterCard logo.

Briefing journalists today in Abuja, NIMC’s Director of Technical Services, Mr Emmanuel Ogungbe disclosed the Commission have already signed an agreement with MasterCard. He explained that, besides being just an ID card, it is also a cash card, so the holder can withdraw money in any place. Moreover, especially within the West African sub-region, it soon would become possible to travel with this card only, passport-free.
