Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on ICT Visit To IAUE

As part of its oversight functions of Government agencies and parastatals, the Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Information and Communications Technology ( ICT), visited Ignatius Ajuru University of Education to have an informed knowledge about challenges facing the university.

Chairman of the House Committee on ICT, Hon. Nwanaka Okpokiri who described ICT as one of the economic development pillars, stated that they were determined to address challenges facing the university in terms of appropriation and release of funds in addition to ensuring that donor agencies, companies and other corporate bodies operating within the university environment were impacting positively on the institution.

He emphasized the need for the university to be ICT compliant and to give students the necessary training required to equip them in the new information and digital age.

The law maker representing Ahoada West constituency pointed out that the Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike led administration is desirous and keen in making sure that the state institution is ICT driven. He assured that the committee would continue to work for IAUE ICT centre to be upgraded to meet world standard.


Also speaking, Hon. Enemi Alabo George, representing Asari- Toru constituency 2, noted that the fifth Assembly is collaborating with sensitive stakeholders to reduce neglect experienced in the education sector and to give ICT its pride of place in the university.

He said that for the university to move forward, they must interven in areas of need for the institution to be competitive, world class and to produce computer literate graduates employable in the labour market.

While welcoming the house committee members on ICT to the university, the Director, Academic Planning, Professor Vincent Asuru who represented the Vice- Chancellor stressed that ranking of universities is basically on ICT visibility on the global network.

He hinted that the robust ICT platform in the university have made easier the delivery of administrative services, financial operations and transactions, registration and release of students results and transcripts.

Professor Asuru informed the house members that senate meeting minutes are accessed online and that plans are on to build a bigger ICT centre with proposals made for students to write their examinations online as part of measures to ensure that they are ICT compliant.

He solicited for funds and release of budgetary allocations for the infrastructural development of the university and to enhance the ICT centre.

The Director ICT, Professor Jane Onwugbuta- Enyi also appealed for Government intervention in constant power supply for the university, a situation she added was a major set back and for a hall to accommodate 500 computers for the ICT centre to be used as a Computer Based Test (CBT) Centre by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for revenue generation for the university.

In her vote of thanks, the Acting Registrar, Mrs Hope Keaniabarido Kue-Ikoro thanked the house committee members on ICT for the visit and pleaded for a change in the name of the university to accommodate more programmes and to attract more students especially with the low patronage currently experienced due to the specialized nature of the university.

The law makers later had a tour of the ICT centre, the e- Library and other facilities at the university.
