UNILAG Authorities Shuns Union Activities During On-going Non-Academic Strike

UNILAG Authorities Shuns Union Activities During On-going Non-Academic Strike.

Authorities of the University of Lagos, UNILAG has frowned at the various Union Activities during the Non-Academic Strike ongoing Strike on Monday, January 8, 2018.

The University Management at its meeting held on Monday, January 8, 2018 received with dismay several reports of actions unbecoming of members of the University community carried out under the auspices of the JAC comprising members of the executive of SSANU, NASU & NAAT.

Please refer to our earlier communications on the level of decorum required by the various unions during strike actions. This is to inform the University community that the extant University rules and policy clearly stipulates that the University should not be locked by staff or student under the guise of any action.

In addition, the barbaric act where members of the executive of some unions take laws into their hands and condescend to the level of attacking other members of staff who go about the lawful discharge of their duties is tantamount to gross violation of the fundamental human rights and amounts to social misconduct.

Importantly, in line with the extant laws, all members of staff are expected to obey the University regulations and be law-abiding. It is the responsibility of staff and student not to engage in any act of violence or brutality/assault (verbal or physical) towards contemporaries and junior colleagues.

For the avoidance of doubt, there are established laws to deal with any infractions by any member of staff and the University Management will not shirk in its responsibility to do the needful as appropriate.

All members of the University community are hereby re-assured of their safety and they should go about their lawful duties.

Regarding the issue of Power Outage the University Management hereby brings to the attention of the community that the power outage witnessed in the evening of Monday, January 8, 2018 was as a result of the nefarious activities of some unscrupulous elements who went to remove over one hundred and twenty (120) fuses of different capacities ranging from 400A to 800A at various power points of university facilities.

This has greatly hindered the transmission of power to faculties, hostels and other facilities. However, the University authority is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that power is restored as soon as possible while perpetrators of this unwholesome despicable act will be brought to book accordingly.

While assuring all members of the community of its resolve to ensure power is restored, Management urges everyone to go about their lawful activities.
