EMPLOYABILITY OF IAUE GRADUATES IN FOCUS AT THE SECOND LEVEL WIDE CURRICULUM REVIEW WORKSHOP

The second level university wide curriculum review workshop has held at the postgraduate hall of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education with a view to repositioning the university for future global visibility and employability of its graduates.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele during his opening remarks, maintained that the workshop occupies a very important position in the life of the institution as the essence of any education is for positive change.

He hinted that education would amount to nothing if it is not able to realize its worthwhile goals, stressing that workshop of this nature provides oppportunity for achievement made so far to be reviewed and to identify other areas where emphasis should be placed on.

Professor Ndimele who stated that the workshop is the foremost step in the right direction, encouraged the Academic Planning Unit, initiators of the workshop to compare notes with what others have done and excel beyond them.

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Dean, Postgraduate School, Professor Daniel Ndubuisi Ogum urged participants to keenly generate ideas and innovations that would lead the university in the right direction for others to follow.

While introducing the subject matter, the Director Academic Planning, Professor Vincent Asuru remarked that early in the year, the Administration stressed the need to review the curriculum to ensure that the university moves with the dynamics of the changing society and also to meet the National Universities Commission (NUC) standard and guidelines.

He said that the move to ensure a purpose driven curriculum that would stand the test of time, rate the university high with knowledge driven students equipped to face the challenges of the 21st century, necessitated the first curriculum review workshop and the present second one.

Professor Asuru noted that the workshop which is also in line with the new vision of the Vice-Chancellor would encourage interactions with the end users of the institution's product who would provide the much needed feedback that would facilitate the way forward.

He enjoined Deans, Heads of Department and Lecturers to enumerate their challenges for solutions to be proferred for all concerned to have a common flag that would make the university stand out in the committee of universities and for the students to adapt to the changing global world.

The Director, Academic Planning Unit, revealed that the full accreditation status of all programmes run by the university is a feat that older universities have not been able to accomplish.

He thanked all staff for working assidiously for that achievement and implored participants to be frank and open in the discussion of their problems for the improvement of the university.

In his presentation, the Managing Director of Living Earth Nigeria, Dr. Anthony Chovon intimated those present at the workshop that the quality of education is not as bad as speculated in some quarters as some students engage in self improvement to outshine others with Information Technology and other resourceful skills at their disposal.

He commended the university for the wonderful work and advised that invitation be extended to the Port-Harcourt Chamber of Commerce and Industry for an interactive session where useful tips on the kind of skills needed for effective realization of results required by the university can be offered.

Dr. Chovon added that the man power supply from the university must be useful to the labour market if there must be a demand for them. He pointed out that curriculum review rarely occurs in most universities and lauded IAUE, stressing that with the recent changes, the review is apt for global competition and employability of IAUE graduates.

He thanked the university for the opportunity to be part of the process and urged them to be flexible in order to accommodate new ideas that would help them get things right.

Also speaking, the Head of Economic Development at Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Cross Rivers, Edo and Delta States (BRACED), Mr. Chuks Ofulue observed that so far, emphasis has been on theory and paper qualification to the detriment of practical and useful skills that could translate to rapid economic development of the Nation.

He said that such emphasis has brought about admission of candidates who should not be in the university but are there because they want to acquire paper qualifications.

Mr. Ofulue advocated the need to de-emphasize acquisition of degree certificates and to create a robust educational system that would deviate from the ordinary subjects that are taught to an entrepreneurial and labour market oriented students.

The Executive Chairman of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board Port-Harcourt, Chief David Briggs was represented by Hon. Shedrack Onu while Dr. Laeticia N. Onyejegbu represented the President of Computer Professionals of Nigeria.

Heads of Department present at the workshop made presentations on their achievements and challenges.

The Deputy Director of Academic Planning, Dr. (Mrs) Hulder Ilogu expressed appreciation to all those who honoured the invitation to move the university to greater heights and urged them not to relent in their service to the university , the State and to humanity in general.
