The senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in its 184th meeting held on 22nd May, 2017, elected representatives in the 8th governing council.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Details of Senate Election

The election which was chaired by the vice chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS and held at the university auditorium was adjudged peaceful.

The election saw the senators nominating 14 persons of whom include
Prof. Charles Onyenekwe, Prof. Godson Okafor, Prof. Ngozi Anyikwa, Prof. Igwebuike Victor Onyiorah, Prof. Charles Nwadigwe, Prof. Tracie Utoh-Ezeajugh and Prof. Eric Ofoedu. Other nominees include Prof. C. C Ihueze, Prof. Ada Omenyi, Prof. O. O Udemezue, Prof. Stan Udedi, Prof. Peter C Nnabude, Prof. Mmaduabuchi Dukor and Prof. Makodi Bierenu Nnabugwu.

The result of the election as casted by 262 senators saw Prof. Ngozi Anyikwa taking the lead with 133 votes, precedeeded by Prof. Peter Nnabude who got 112 votes, this was followed by Prof. Okwudili Udemezue who pulled 89 votes. There was a tie between Prof. Ada Omenyi and Prof. Stan Udedi as both pulled 88 votes each. This led to the chairman declaring a run-off to determine the 4th person.

At the end of the run-off in which 162 senators participated, Prof. Ada Omenyi pulled 89 votes to defeat Prof. Stan Udedi who pulled 70 votes.

Hence, Professors Ngozi Anyikwa, Peter Nnabude, Okwudili Udemezue and Ada Omenyi stood elected to represent the senate in the 8th governing council of the university.

Earlier in his address shortly before the elections, Prof. Ahaneku stressed that the purpose of the senate meeting is to take key decisions that would propel the institution to enviable pedestal.

In his words, "We are here for the progress, unity, peace of this institution, for our children, for the Nigerian public and to make our mark. We are here for the development of our university.

"The idea of not being part of the system, excluding oneself in the scheme of things will render the individual or unit where the persons serves inactive, sub optimal, inefficient and at the very end, would reduce the interest or zeal of reaching and breaking new grounds.

"Before we take the decisions of today, we must search our conscience. Some of us are not even giving our minimum. Let's make out contributions as passers-by in this institution. Right or wrong contributions, posterity would judge us", Ahaneku stated.

Recalling the decision of the senate on the publishing of results after one month, Prof. Ahaneku stressed that the decision stands urging all the heads of departments to adhere strictly to the decision, salaries of defaulter shall be withheld.

Prof. Ahaneku further called on the lecturers to fulfill their obligations to the students by attending at least 75% of their lectures. He frowned at the attitude of forcing students to buy books written by the lecturers stating that any good teacher would recommend standard texts and not the other way round.

The DR Exams, Mrs. Uju Okonkwo represented the university registrar at the event.
