FUTA Re-appoints Arayela As Deputy V.C. Academics

The Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, has re-appointed Professor Olatunde Arayela as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) for another term of two years. Professor Arayela, who by his re-election by the Senate of the institution and subsequent appointment is in charge of Academic Administration, Curriculum Development, Examinations, Admissions and other Senate Matters in the University was first appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) on 1st April, 2015.

He graduated from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile Ife in 1981 and 1983 with B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Architecture respectively. He obtained another M.Sc. degree in Urban and Regional Planning in 1996 from the same Institution before bagging a PhD in Architecture from the Federal University of Technology, Akure in 2000.

Arayela started his career as an Assistant Lecturer in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1984 and rose to Lecturer II in 1987 before transferring his service to FUTA in 1990 as one of the pioneer members of staff of the Department of Architecture. In FUTA, he rose through the ranks to become Professor in 2003 and was appointed pioneer Head of Department. In the formative years (between 1990 and 2007), he had the privilege of nurturing the Department for twelve (12) years as Head.

During this period, the Department secured back-to-back full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 1996 and 2004 respectively, making Architecture the first Department in its School to accomplish that feat. The professional accreditation exercises conducted by the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) were also successful at this time.

Professor Arayela served as Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) between 2007 and 2011. He was the first Director of the University’s Academic Planning Unit (APU) between 2013 and 2015, during which (May 2014) he compiled all academic programmes in FUTA in a published document named “Compendium of Course Outlines”. The publication is today a reference point for the review of programmes in preparation for accreditation exercises by the University Senate, among others.

As a professional, he has distinguished himself with the design of some key projects in FUTA such as the University Main Auditorium building, the new University Senate extension building, the 3-in-1 lecture classroom complex, the University Advancement Centre building to mention a few.

He was a member of the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and the Ondo State Chapter Chairman between 2005 and 2010, Architects Registration Council of Nigeria - ARCON between 2010 and 2013, a body charged with the regulation and practice of Architecture in Nigeria.

He is widely travelled and has attended several workshops, conferences and courses on Higher Education Management and other tertiary education-related programmes in Ghana, Rwanda, Israel, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, USA, Canada and locally in Nigeria.

He is happily married and blessed with children.
