3 Days Retreat Conducted For FUTA Student Leaders

A good and qualitative leader should be able to guide the followers to safety and ensure that everyone is performing optimally. 

The Dean, Students’ Affairs, Professor Kayode Alese stated this at the three days Retreat organized for the new executives of the Students Union of the Federal University of Technology, Akure held at the Ikogosi Warm Spring Resort, Ikogosi, Ekiti State. Speaking on the characteristics of a leader, Alese said one of it is the ability to stay focused. He admonished FUTA students to make quality education their objective so as to come out in flying colours.

Welcoming the students leaders to the retreat, he said “the training enhances the smooth running of the tenure of the leaders where several issues bordering on their leadership responsibilities are dealt with and the training is a preparation for the future, as everyone, irrespective of the vocation should first be able to lead himself/herself and then extend such ability to lead others in the family and the society at large”.

Professor Alese who urged the student to desist from hooliganism and destruction of properties said “no matter who you are and what your grievances might be, the best method of achieving your desire is through negotiation rather than confrontation”.

On the challenge of leadership, Alese said “we want you to take cognizance of the fact that leadership is a great privilege. A lot of responsibilities came with the privileges of leadership. We leaders are not to lord it over our followers; rather, we are to represent these followers and protect their interest.”

In his address, the Dean, School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, (SAAT) and Chairman, Committee of Deans, Professor Shadrack Akindele who represented the University Management said the University is committed to training of Students’ Union leaders who are involved in the process of governance in the University.

Speaking further he said the forum is to sensitize the leaders and expose them to the principle of effective student’s governance and best practices in Student Unionism. It is also designed to inculcate in students skills that will enable them fulfill the mandate and deliver the dividend of students’ democratic process to the fellow student through good relationship with management and staff as well as the host communities.

Speaking on the topic: Leadership Qualities Expected of Responsive and Responsible student leader, the keynote speaker, Barrister B. J. Adaramola said leaders who are authentic are trusted because they are unwavering, especially when faced with the challenges of popular opinion. He reminded them that as student government representatives, the ideals that got them elected should be consistent throughout policy making and planning.

He advised the student leaders to learn from the mistakes of their predecessor. “Think for the future, learn from the past and act in the now. Great leaders reflect on past events to plan for the future. Go into the archives and learn from the successes and failure of those who have gone ahead of you” he added. Professor Akindele also assured FUTASU official that the University Management is committed to an all-time open door administration and ensure that FUTASU are adequately carried along on any matter that has bearing on FUTASU welfare.

In another paper, Engr. (Dr.) O. O. Olubanjo who spoke on the topic Accountability and Probity in the Management of the Union finances urged the students’ leaders to maintain transparency and accountability in all their doings. Olubanjo said accountability and probity are principles in the heart of any democracy that strengthen the legitimacy of government, its policies and decision in the eyes of the people.

He further described accountability as the acknowledgment and assumption of responsibility for actions, products, decisions and policies including the administration, governance and implementation within the scope of the role or employee’s position. He said “accountability encompasses the obligation to report, explain and answer for resulting consequences”.

Other papers presented include Student Leadership Abuse of Power and Suggested Solution; the Role of Effective Communication in Student/Management partnership; Weathering the Storm of Crisis: The Role of Student Leaders and the Challenge of On/Off Campus Security and the Role (relevance) of Students’ Union Leaders.

A former Dean of Students, Professor Dapo Fagbenro who spoke on Student Leadership Abuse of Power and Suggested Solutions encouraged the executives to imbibe virtues like integrity, transparency and accountability, discipline and dedication, vigilance, diligence, honour and dignity, reliability and responsibility among others.

He also urged them to avoid deceit, aggression, intimidation, violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, prostitution, crime, thuggery, cultism and other vices.

Dr. (Mrs.) Funmi Olubode-Sawe who handled the paper on communication emphasized the role of effective communication in leadership. She said “communicating effectively is crucial for an effective Student Union/administration relationship.

When negotiating for the welfare of your members, your goal is to make yourself and your position understood and this relies on your communication ability. Be a reliable source of information to administration as well as the student body.”
