Federal University of Technology WASCAL Tends A Reference Point

The Executive Director, West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use, Accra, Ghana, a German initiative programme on Climate variation, Professor Jimmy Adegoke has said that the Centre domiciled at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA has become a reference point on Climate issues. Adegoke made this remark during a working visit to WASCAL, FUTA.
He said, since its establishment at FUTA, WASCAL has thrived in churning out graduates from across the West African sub region that can compete globally. Adegoke who has contributed his quota to the quality of the products at FUTA WASCAL through project supervision and as external examiner said “you have achieved a lot in training Doctoral students that are globally relevant. FUTA has created amazing and unique image for WASCAL”.
Reflecting on the choice of FUTA for the Centre, Adegoke said “FUTA competed with other Universities in West Africa through a transparent process and beat them to it. This is a proof that this University is great and can rate with other sister Institutions in the West African sub region, the African continent and globally. You are doing a great job here through the training given to your products attracted from West Africa and who are doing wonderfully well. I must confess that
I have been a part of this University, especially your WASCAL programme and have seen it all. You are doing excellently well”.
The Executive Director, who promised the support of his Centre in Accra to FUTA, says “we plan to expand the scope of the programme to make it stronger than it is at the moment”.
He also commended the funding country, Germany for supporting the Centres over the years and called on beneficiary countries and Institutions to brace up to generate fund so as to complement the effort from Germany. “The funding country, Germany, has a lot of financial pressure.
But because we have created a good footing on our sub-continent we should strive to leverage on the initial investment and build on it with our own resources and internal efforts.
A lot of partners are interested in FUTA WASCAL and the best investment is to invest in people. That is why we all commend your effort in training people for the continent. I will be working with your Centre, especially your director to diversify the funding base for the programme”.
Responding, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academic), Professor Olatunde Arayela assured Professor Adegoke of stronger relationship. He described Adegoke as a stakeholder in FUTA. Arayela also appreciated the robust contribution of WASCAL to the development of FUTA, saying “WASCAL has further internationalized FUTA.
This complemented the vision of taking FUTA to the market place. “WASCAL has internationalized FUTA to a great extent. We are still ready to collaborate so as to overcome all challenges and move WASCAL forward. Whatever the Management can do, we will do. WASCAL is a prime programme and we will continue to hold it so” he added.
Earlier, the Director, FUTA WASCAL, Professor Kehinde Ogunjobi described Professor Adegoke “as our own and part of us in the University” who has been very supportive.
Ogunjobi also said that Professor Adegoke has been helpful to some staff and students at the departmental level allowing them access to his laboratory during their sabbatical and studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, United States of America where he is an award-winning Climate Scientist and Chair of the Department of Geosciences.
