FUTA: SIXTH (6TH) SUBSTANTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR‘S TENURE ENDS ON 23RD MAY, 2017

The attention of the University Community is being drawn to the fact that the Vice-Chancellor has received a letter dated 5th May, 2017, from the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) FUTA, asking for clarification on the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Gregory Daramola, fnaae.

The ASUU leadership has specifically requested for this information so as to prevent loss of peace on Campus. While the Vice-Chancellor appreciates the concern of ASUU-FUTA leadership on this matter and has responded to provide the required information, it is considered expedient to bring this to the public domain and in particular to the members of the university community that the information making the rounds in some quarters within the campus that the incumbent 6th substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi G. Daramola, assumed office on the 10th May, 2012; and as such his tenure should end on 9th May, 2017 is absolutely incorrect.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is to inform all members of staff, students and the entire members of the University Community that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi G. Daramola, fnaae assumed office on the 24th May, 2012, the same day his inauguration took place at an unprecedented inauguration ceremony at the Hill Top Auditorium. This, ipso facto, implies that his 5-year tenure will come to an end on 23rd May, 2017.

Attention is particularly drawn to paragraphs 2 and 3 of his letter of appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure with ref. No. FUTA/REG.AVC/283 dated 10th May, 2012, which stipulate that:

  • The appointment which is for a single term of five (5) years will take effect from Thursday, 24th May, 2012.
  • You will be required to commence immediate understudy of the incumbent Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor E.A. Fasakin towards a smooth handing over on Thursday, 24th May, 2012, after your formal inauguration as the Vice-Chancellor of the University.”

The University Management wishes to appeal to all staff, students and the entire members of the University Community to discountenance and ignore any action being orchestrated to cause breach of peace and stability on campus.

Thank you all.
